Learn, Grow and Succeed With Small Business Workshops

The Warren County Economic Development Corporation (WCEDC), Indianola Chamber of Commerce, Simpson College Enactus, Right Teaching  and Etc!Graphics have partnered together to bring small businesses and the self-employed various free small business workshops in April.

Funding for the Learn Grow Succeed workshops came from Simpson College Enactus and WCEDC. The organizations involved plan to hold three to five workshops.

“We do have a budget, of course,” said Deb Downey, workshop instructor and owner of Right Teaching. “The number we decided on was three to five right now depending on interest.  If there is sufficient interest, I’m sure we’ll do more.”

Downey says these workshops will allow entrepreneurs to focus and improve upon different areas of their businesses.

“I’ve been a small businesses owner, and as a small businesses owner, I found there wasn’t enough time to do a great job at everything: marketing, keeping up with online resources and running the business,” Downey, said. “When I did set aside time to focus on a particular part, I was able to increase my success in that area. So these classes are an opportunity for them to set aside that time to focus on a particular piece of business.”

Local entrepreneurs get to choose which topics will be taught and when. Some of the workshop topics entrepreneurs can choose from include financing, business planning, branding, pricing and social media.

“We have all been working together to come up with workshops that would be free for local entrepreneurs, and the first step in that is to have local entrepreneurs respond to a survey of just five questions,” Downey, said. “Answer five questions about what they would like to learn. Then, we have a place for people to add their own ideas, too, whatever topic you want to learn about. They actually choose the days and times they would like to attend.”

Entrepreneurs who fill out the survey by March 23 will receive a resource guide listing 21 different area services for small businesses and be notified by email which workshop topics were chosen and when they will be held.

“We’re planning to have (the workshops) at the Simpson campus,” Downey, said. “If you find out about this after the survey is done, you can still attend the workshops.”

Businesses can contact Deb Downey for more information about the workshops via email at
