In a forum Monday, local governments and business leaders found themselves divided on the different proposals for property tax reform.
Reforming property tax is an important issue for business owners, who pay a majority of property taxes.
The Des Moines Register reports local governments favored the Iowa Senate’s plan. Under this plan, property tax rates and rollbacks would remain unchanged but provide tax credits to property owners.
The Iowa Taxpayers Association sided more with Governor Branstad’s plan that would push back the value of commercial and industrial properties subject to taxation.
House Republicans have also proposed a plan similar to Branstad’s but would increase the state’s share of primary and secondary education costs.
